Unknown Holidays

Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, you think you’d know it all. But there are some peculiar holidays that nobody knows about- mostly because it’s ridiculous why they exist!
National Watermelon Day

Apparently, August 3rd is the day to eat lots of watermelon. This holiday is a fun summer celebration to honor the popular, refreshing summer fruit that is roughly 92% water, offering relief from high temperatures. It promotes consumption of this hydrating, nutrient-rich treat through picnics, recipes, and activities like seed-spitting contests. (I honestly think this is just an excuse to eat watermelon.) The day highlights the fruit's role in providing hydration during the hottest part of the summer. It celebrates the diversity of watermelon in salads, desserts, and drinks, as well as its long history dating back over 5,000 years. Watermelon is packed with nutrients like vitamins A and C, as well as lycopene, and is a healthy, low-calorie treat.
Dance like a Chicken Day

Everyone is most likely familiar with the Chicken dance. If you hear about this holiday, these questions probably come to your mind: What is the purpose of this holiday? Who thought of this? Well, the purpose of this “holiday” is to irritate everyone you see by dancing like a chicken on May 14. Haha, just kidding. It is a lighthearted, fun holiday intended to bring joy, laughter, and a bit of absurdity to everyday life. Absurd is right!
National Nothing Day

This holiday’s only reason for existing is… well… nothing! It’s most popularly known as a “non-event,” which means it acts as some form of rebellion against hustle culture. January 16th is just a day to kick back, relax, and do nothing. The goal is to have one day with zero obligations, allowing people to avoid being productive or celebrating anything.
World Chocolate Chip Day

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be happy to know that on May 15th you can eat as many chocolate chips as you want. Don’t mix this day up with August 4th however, that is National chocolate chip cookie day. Both days are for enjoying, baking, and sharing chocolate chip treats. World chocolate chip day is dedicated to enjoying chocolate chips in various forms, including cookies, ice cream, and muffins, recognizing their massive impact on baking. It’s also to celebrate the invention of the chocolate chip, which Ruth Graves Wakefield accidentally invented back in 1937 when she created the treat by making cookies and putting chocolate into them, intending for the chocolate to melt. But the chocolate stayed in chunks, inventing the "Toll House Cookie".
