Slap A Bow On It: The Coquette Aesthetic

Have you seen those TikToks of people putting bows on everything, even their toilet seats? Where does this all come from, well this started off in 2010 on Tumblr where the term originated from the mind of the narrator of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. The term coquette refers to the baby pink hyper-feminine 1960’s-esque aesthetic. The aesthetic has become a whooping hit on the platform TikTok in the form of bows.

Anywhere you go, there are bows everywhere. But like all trends, this will most likely not last very long. I predict that it will be a fad, like the “kid-core” fashion of 2020, and will die out. The bows are a cute accessory, but are overused. It is associated with the famous pop artist, “Lana Del Rey” and is known as the “coquette” aesthetic. But not everything can be coquette, you cannot slap a bow on something and call it Lana Del Rey coquette coded!

Like in the edits you see of grown men and women with bows on their heads. An example of it is on TikTok there are edits of Enhypen's Jake in an edit with a little cutie patootie pink bow on his head!!! These edits usually are slowed and reverbed with calm music and a cute, calm vibe to them. Just search up “coquette’ and it shows lots of more content with pink bows. WE LOVE COQUETTE!

As a member of the coquette community, even I can agree, the hyper-coquettification of anything and everything has to end soon. Look, I get it, it's fun to just slap a bow on everything. But it's getting old, just like how “Ohio” got outdated, and “Rizz” , “Sigma”,  and many more.

What do we think of the coquettification of Drake?

How about our fearless leader..Mr. Ng?
