May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Some may ask “What is Mental Health Awareness Month?”, “Why is it a thing?”, or even “Why does it matter?”  Well this article will answer all those questions!

What is Mental Health Awareness Month?

Mental Health Awareness Month is in May and is to bring awareness and break the stigma around having mental health issues. It was founded in 1949 and helps understand and accept people who have issues with their mental health. Most people make fun of other people for having these issues with themselfs which actually makes their mental health much worse than it originally was because of bullying.

Why is it a thing?

Mental Health Awareness Month exists because it brings issues that many people face to light and being understanding of those issues and helping. With many people making fun of people with these issues it makes life for the person much harder. People who struggle with mental health issues tend to not tell people about the issues they have.

Why does it matter?

Mental Health Awareness Month is extremely important to thriving in the US.  According to the World Health Organization it says, “In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a massive 25%, according to a scientific brief released by the World Health Organization (WHO) today.”  The rate of anxiety and depression is only increasing. Unfortunately this rate is very rapid.

What causes Anxiety or depression?

Some causes are bullying, school issues, or even family issues. People tend to hide issues from others including family and close friends. Most people that are dealing with these things tend to have withdrawals from things they used to love or even stop eating. The stress from school and family is the most anxiety while depression is mostly caused by friends and school.

How can I help?

If you know someone who is struggling or looks like they are upset, you could always recommend them help or even recommend guidance counselors at school. Remind them to eat food and drink water. Finally tell them that you are here for them.

If you or someone you know is struggling don't be afraid to call 800-950-6264 or call or text 988.
