What Happened So Far This Month In Theatre?

It’s the month of January and a lot has happened this month on and off Broadway. But what are some of the most important events that happened this month? 

Closings

There have been many closings, like one of the most iconic Broadway shows, Beetlejuice, closed on January 3rd after its 13 week run, Waiting For Godot recently closed on January 4th and Queen Of Versailles, starring one of the most influential Broadway stars: Kristen Chenoweth closed on January 4th. Not to mention, the hit Alicia Keys musical Hell's Kitchen is set to close in February this year. 

Cast Changes and Openings

On a positive note, the Broadway revival of Bug the musical opened on January 8th and many shows just announced their new cast changes. Who said that you can’t repeat the past because of Aishia Jackson’s set departure (editors remark: Just want to say that Aishia is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met) from The Great Gatsby, it was announced that it’s soon going to be starring the original actor for Daisy Buchanan, Eva Noblezada (February 5) along with her husband Reeve Carney as Gatsby (March 30) making this their 3rd Broadway show the iconic Broadway couple will be starring in together as love interests. 


Speaking of Eva and Reeve, the new cast of Hadestown has also recently been announced with Joshua Colley as Orpheus, Jordan Tyson as Eurydice, and so many other iconic actors taking over the stage. Importantly, Peyton List is set to join the Off-Broadway cast of Heathers as Heather Chandler on January 26! Six the musical has recently announced their recast so far, Adrinna Hicks (og Broadway cast) will be playing the role of Catherine of Aragon, Dylan Mulvaney will be playing Anne Boleyn, Jasmine Forsberg (Broadway 2.0 cast) will be playing Jane Seymour, Olivia Donaldson (Broadway 2.0 cast member) will be playing Anne of Cleves, Abigale Marlow will be playing Katherine Howard and Anne Uzele (og Broadway cast) will be playing Catherine Parr.


Birthdays

There are/were a lot of birthdays this month but some are 

  • Renee Elise Goldsberry who is best known for her role in Hamilton as Eliza - January 2nd

  • Cynthia Erivo who is best known for her role of Elphaba in the Wicked movie and Celie Harris in The Color Purple - January 8th

Lin-Manuel Miranda who is best known for creating In The Heights and Hamilton while also playing the role of Alexander Hamilton - January 16th
