Halloween is just around the corner– who’s excited? I know I am! Who would miss the chance to have fun and receive candy (for free)? Halloween is so much fun, teachers take the day to spread some joy by giving students candy. For those sweeter teachers, they bring left over candy and spark sugar rushes during class discussions.
Many people just think Halloween is just a time for fun and games, but Halloween has been around for over 2,000 years! Historic records indicate that Halloween is even older than Christianity itself. It started as a pre-Christian Celtic festival called Samhain. Samhain means “summer’s end,” and it was held at the beginning of November. The feast recognized the last day of the fall harvest and they believed the veil between the living and spirit world grew thinnest at that period, allowing spirits to cross over. People used to ward off ghosts by lighting bonfires and wearing costumes (like we do now) to trick the spirits.
Getting free candy may be great, but what makes it even better is that you get free candy while spending time with friends and family! You also get to wear whatever you want, and Halloween is the day that you can choose what you want to be. That, along with free candy– what could be better than that? When I come to school on Halloween, I wonder if any of my teachers will have anything festive.
Overall, Halloween is something to be excited about. You get free candy and you get to hang out with your friends– that sounds exciting. Halloween has changed over time, but it is still a holiday that everyone celebrates. Happy Halloween!
