Five Unusual Foods That Are Actually Eaten

Dylan Deenihan

Food is obviously a big part of lots of people’s lives. Foods like bread, rice, and eggs are very common and they are definitely very normal to eat. But here, I’m going to tell you about some foods that sound very weird, but are actually eaten in places around the world!

#5: Kangaroo Meat

We all know kangaroos as cute, big animals that can jump up to ten feet high! But believe it or not, in some parts of Australia, people know kangaroos as a food source. In fact, the meat even comes in many forms, including steaks, minced meat, and even kangaroo sausages! I mean, kangaroos can be aggressive and dangerous, but this doesn’t happen often, so it’s still a little hard to see why they get eaten.

#4: Ambrosia Salad

Despite the name, ambrosia salad is not exactly a salad. The ingredients are cherries, pineapple, oranges, (I know it doesn’t sound so bad yet, just wait) and mini marshmallows. All that is thrown in a bowl and mixed inside a big bowl of whipped cream. Apparently, it is named after ambrosia, a food for the gods in Greek mythology.(though this food is actually American.) So while its namesake sounds good, the actual Ambrosia salad definitely doesn’t sound the best. (weirdly enough, I kind of want to try it.)

#3: Pufferfish

Imagine you’re looking for some seafood to eat. What sounds good? Maybe salmon? Maybe shrimp? Maybe pufferfish? Wait, what now? Yes, in Japan, people do eat this venomous fish. It’s really only served in restaurants, though, because it’s so poisonous that it has to be prepared very carefully and you need to get approved if you want to cook it.

#2: Alligator

Alligators can be very dangerous if provoked, and I guess humans thought that was a good excuse to eat them. It is sometimes used as a substitute in recipes that require chicken or seafood. The tail and jaw are sometimes used as smaller parts in recipes, while the body and legs can even be served as a main course. Eating alligators definitely sounds weird, but at least people don’t eat alligator eggs, right? Right? Wait a minute…

#1: Bird’s Nest Soup

Bird’s nest soup? What is that? Is it actually made of a bird’s nest? Unfortunately, yes. Bird’s nest soup is a delicacy in China, and is made of things like twigs, moss, and even hair! And just wait until you hear the true secret ingredient: (wait for it) bird saliva. I wish I was joking, but nope, literal bird spit is used in making bird’s nest soup! (I don’t know about you,but that sounds disgusting, to say the least.) Moral of this article: humans eat some pretty weird things.
