The Rise of AI: Is It Good or Bad for humans?

Lately, people have been adapting to AI (Artificial Intelligence), but a growing number of individuals are raising serious concerns about this rapidly evolving technology. While AI offers undeniable convenience, the subject and usage of AI brings some huge debates that people will argue about for years to come.

For one thing, AI can replace people’s jobs; an example of this recently happened when Microsoft offered voluntary buyouts to 60,000 employees as AI leads to Microsoft needing an efficiency push. In other words, AI just replaced 60,000 jobs and this also means adults, some with families and children, lost their jobs.

AI can also potentially manipulate or catfish people online, making it easy for users to get tricked by fake accounts. In addition, AI is starting to act so smart that it feels like it is creating a mind of its own, and lately, most people are not even aware that this is happening.

Research from University of California states,”Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming modern society. AI systems are now used in healthcare, education, transportation, social media, and more. While AI has the potential to improve efficiency, increase productivity, and solve complex problems, it also creates significant risks and ethical concerns. As AI technologies continue to expand into everyday life, researchers and policymakers are increasingly warning about the social, economic, and political harms that may result from unregulated or irresponsible AI development.”

Some people are still left wondering whether AI is a possible threat or a good solution, but what do you think? Today I sat down with fellow classmates and asked that question. Here are some answers:

Samantha Huang 810: I think it has gotten way out of hand. Now in this generation, kids have gotten way more reliable on this.

Emily Garcia 820: I think it is good in some ways but it's been used in this generation a lot and people use it in everyday life.

Anabel Gonzalez 706: I feel like people nowadays use AI a lot and instead of using the internet, people just use AI now.

Mr. Ng: In my opinion I think AI is not going to last as long as people think. Humans are always going to be needed because artificial intelligence stands for fake. I don’t think it’s possible for AI to gain its own knowledge because they need human output.

Oscar Zhou 808: I think AI is bad because AI is built on human creativity and AI is a tool to help people not a tool to replace people. If you really think about it it’s just a bunch of steel. The fact that the school is using AI, I feel like it’s just ridiculous and it’s just terrible.

As you can see, there are various opinions on artificial intelligence. Like other forms of new technology, we should proceed with caution.
