Starting 6th grade can feel like a big leap—new school, new teachers, new routines—but don’t worry! We spoke to students who just finished their first year, and they had plenty of great advice to share. Here’s what they learned (sometimes the hard way!) that can help make your year a little easier and a lot more fun.
📚 School Success Tips
Middle school can feel like a whole new world compared to elementary school. One of the biggest challenges is staying focused in class. Some students find that having small things like mints or gum can help them concentrate (ask your teacher if it’s allowed first!). Also, keeping your computer charged is a must—make it a habit to plug it in as soon as you get home.
Homework is a big deal in middle school. Start planning when and how you’ll do it so it doesn’t pile up. And yes, distractions are everywhere—especially from classmates who’d rather chat than work. Don’t be afraid to let your teacher know if it becomes a problem.
Music can sometimes help you focus on homework, especially with noise around you, so bringing headphones can be a lifesaver. If the workload ever feels too heavy, remember: you can always ask your teachers for help or even a short extension if needed. Some teachers are available during lunch for extra help—just ask!
Finally, while games might be tempting, playing them during class isn’t worth it. It distracts everyone, including yourself. Save the fun for free time!
🗣 Drama & Friendship Advice
Worried about making friends? You’re not alone. But most people in 6th grade are looking for new friends too! Just be yourself and don’t stress too much—friendships will happen naturally. Some classmates might be loud or chaotic, but many are kind and fun to be around.
If you’re nervous about how you look or dress, don’t be. Most students are just trying to figure things out like you are, and chances are, no one’s judging. In fact, you might get compliments!
Yes, there can be drama—especially around friendships and relationships. Believe it or not, even 11-year-olds start “dating,” and sometimes others try to get involved, which can lead to messy situations. The best advice? Stay out of the drama if you can, and focus on being a good friend.
It might take a few weeks to find your group, but that’s totally normal. Stay positive and open to meeting different kinds of people.
🧠 Dealing with Stress & Other Tips
Sixth grade can be stressful—no doubt about it. If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, talk to someone you trust, like a guidance counselor. (Students highly recommend Mrs. Peterson in Room 202!)
Another tip: pack a small emergency kit in your backpack with things like tissues, lip balm, or hair ties. It can help you feel more prepared during the day. Also, keep some snacks in your bag. While eating in class isn’t allowed, having something quick to eat during lunch or before school can make a big difference. Just don’t skip meals—being hungry can make everything feel harder!
Don’t forget to carry a phone or headphone charger too. If your devices are low, you can charge them using your Chromebook’s USB port.
Thinking of joining clubs? Go for it! But don’t overdo it. Try starting with 1–3 clubs so you don’t get overwhelmed. Clubs are a great way to meet people and explore new interests.
Final Words
Sixth grade can feel scary at first—but remember, everyone else is adjusting too. There will be challenges, but also lots of fun and new opportunities. Stay organized, ask for help when you need it, and most importantly, be kind to yourself and others.
Good luck, future 6th graders—you’ve got this!
