The Middle East War

Oscar Chen and Liam Kuang

The Israeli-Palestinian War has been going on since 1948 and still being fought today.

Why are they fighting?

The Palestinians have been fighting for independence, and, in addition to that, Palestine also wants to fight for the Gaza Strip, West Bank, security, Jerusalem, and many other reasons. Palestinians claim the Gaza Strip as their territory and see them as part of a future state. On October 8th 2023, Hamas (Terrorist group of Palestine) sent a surprise attack to Israel which officials say 700 people died but only 260 were found dead. Everything after that went turbulent. 42,500 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed and more than half of them were women and children. However, Palestine’s population has still been going up by 2.3%. Israel, on the other hand, has only 1,706 Israelis who have died and the fertility rate is 5.08%. The war will still go on for a long time before someone will surrender.

On October 8th 2023, a day after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel and Israel began its bombing of Gaza, and Hezbollah (A terrorist group of Lebanon) joined the conflict in solidarity with the Palestinians. Lebanon has been in the conflict since 1978 and Israel has knocked down Lebanon in wars in 1978, 1982, and 2024.  Over time the Lebanon War caused a growing division between those Lebanese who supported the right of the Palestinians to stage operations against Israel from Lebanese, and those who were against them.

The following Middle East countries are also supporting Palestine: Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Iran, and Syria. These countries in the Middle East support Palestine which is about all of them. But, strong countries like the USA and the UK support Israel, which means that this war might go on a lot longer than people think.

Iran, Syria, and Iraq have also been in this conflict as well. Iran has been backing up Palestine and ended their alliances with Israel by turning over the Israeli embassy in Tehran to the Palestine Liberation Organization. Iran is in the conflict because they sent artillery rockets to Palestine. Iran has remained a key patron of Hamas, providing them with funds, weapons, and training. Iran provides about $100 million annually to Palestinian militant groups, including Hamas.

Iraq declared war on the Jewish state of Israel in 1948, and since then, relations between the two states have remained hostile. Iraq has strongly supported the cause of the Palestinians since then. Iraq sent armies to fight Israel in 1948 and 1967. Iraq also sent troops to provide backups for Syria armed forces during the Yom Kippur war in 1973.

Syria supported Palestine and announced its support to Palestine because according to aljazeera.com,“We’re trying to provide assistance to any country that needs it,” head of operations Dulama Ali told Al Jazeera. This means that Syria will support Palestine because they are trying to help any country in need.

Saudi Arabia is also helping Palestine. In 1947, Saudi Arabia was one of several Middle Eastern States that voted against the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine. Saudi troops were sent to fight against Israel in the 1948 and 1973 wars. Palestine has most of the Middle-Eastern countries on its side.

According to CNN, USA officials are heading to the Middle East in a push to resolve the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, and to put off an Iranian response to Israel’s strikes on October 23. Lebanon’s prime minister said it is important that a potential Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire could be struck next week.

To conclude, the Israel and Palestine conflict may go on for a long time and will result in a lot of problems. However, the population in both countries are still rising which means that the fertility rate will keep going up. A lot of countries from the Middle East support Palestine but strong countries like the US support Israel. Which unfortunately might result in continual fighting.
