Korean Legend of Creation

A long time ago, in the region of (nowadays) North Korea, there were people living in the area. And the God of Heaven, Chun-sin, told his son, Hwan-in, to go down to the Earth with the spirits to help the people. And then, the clouds had parted, and riding down the clouds was Hwuanin. And starting from the moment, he taught people to be able to farm, and other skills.

Some period of time later, Hwanin had a child named Hwanung. And he was a wise person. One day, a tiger and a bear came to him. They said “We want to be humans!” and Hwanung said “if you can live 100 days without seeing the light of day and only eat garlic and mugwort, then you will turn into a human,” So, the tiger and the bear went into a cave, and starting to eat garlic and mugwort. After some period of time later, the tiger said to the bear, “I can’t take this! Even if I want to be a human, I won’t do this! And anyway, I miss the fresh deer meat,” So the tiger had gone, but the bear had stayed put.

And after all efforts, the bear, after eating nothing but the garlic and mugwort, the bear had turned into a beautiful lady, and Hwanung married the now-human bear and had a baby named Dangun. And Dangun lived for the next 1,000 years, ruling the areas of nowadays North Korea and Southern Manchuria.
