Knock Knock, What Clubs Are Up?

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

M.S. 158 has so many great clubs and teams activities to sign up for after school. These clubs/teams can vary from extra help, clubs that are really just for fun and even joining a team where you can do both!!

Some clubs M.S. 158 has to offer is the student newspaper..that you are currently reading (The Curious Times), Theater Club (Last year we put on Shrek Jr!), Basketball and Volleyball Teams.

All of these teams and clubs are lead by some of the best teachers in our building. You heard that right, these clubs or teams are not Beacon Programs. The afterschool teams and clubs are led by our very own teachers. If not for the students, we would not have these clubs/teams because all of these clubs/teams are created by students to give all students a chance to join.

So let's do a deep dive into each of the clubs you can join at our school, who to go to if you want to join them, and the best parts about each club!! Hopefully, this article can motivate you to join some clubs in the future!

  1. Newspaper Club - The Curious Times (Run By: Mr Ng) : The Curious Times is THE place for Marie Curie's best writers. In the Curious Times, (the very club I am writing for right now), we write about various issues such as bullying, updates about the school, and even fun comics! The Curious time is a great club for all students who love writing and expressing their feelings about M.S. 158 and its biggest ups and downs.

  2. Theater Club - The School Musical (Run By: Mrs. Allen): The theater club performs a musical every year. Last year they partnered with Shubert Theater/Musical Theater International and were given a grant to put on Shrek the Musical Jr.!. And they’re doing it again this year. The theater club is an amazing club for students who love acting, singing, and dancing.

  3. Student Government (Run By: Mr. Gordon): The Student Government is perfect for anyone who wants to represent the student voice and improve the school. The Student Government has been running for a few years now and every year we have new voices and ideas.

  4. Science Club (Run By: Mrs. Dias and Mrs. Biondo): The Science Club has also been going on for a few years and is perfect for students who are interested in science and topics similar to science.

  5. Civics Club (Run By: Ms. Coogan and Ms. Schifaudo): The Civics Club started two years ago and it is somewhat similar to the Student Government except for the fact that it is related to Social Studies. But don’t let that fact scare you from joining. I mean last year the Civics Club created the one and only Student Lounge!

  6. Asian Cultural Club (Run By: Ms Chang and Ms Wong): You don’t need to be Asian to join Asian Cultural Club! The Asian Culture Club (ACC) is perfect for those who want to enjoy or immerse themselves with the Asian Culture! They offer field trips and activities that will get your adrenaline pumping and your excitement going!

  7. Track Club (Run By: Ms. Weisser): Don’t feel put off if you're not the next great basketball player or volleyball player. You are still athletic and you can still be a student athlete. If you want to stay fit and feel athletic, The Track Club is for those students who like running or WANT to be more athletic! You start by running one or two laps around the school which turns into running three to five laps around the school and it just keeps building!

  8. Basketball/Volleyball Teams (Run By Mr Epstein and Ms Krieger): Trying out for the team is an amazing experience. You go through a series of tests to make sure you are a top player. Despite this Marie Curie's own boys basketball team was 0-8 last year, while the girls basketball team made it up to the finals. On the volleyball side, they did not play a lot of games, though every game they played they won. The two teams were top teams in the district and if you like either basketball or volleyball, they are surely recommended. Can anyone name any basketball players that came out of Marie Curie 158, that played high school basketball, went to a good Division I college, and play semi-professional basketball?

  9. Soccer Team (Run By: Mr Tejada and Ms Goldman): As well as basketball and volleyball, soccer was also a huge sport in M.S. 158. The team went 4-5 (4 loses, 5 wins). The soccer team is a really fun team for big time soccer players! We had lots of 8th Grade superstar players in Joseph Santos Nunez, Alexis Encalada Borja, Hynwoo Paek, and Achille Guykoff. And the 7th Graders dominated as well, Ethan Foto and Dominik Pietraszewski. And the defensive mastermind, Stamati Petratos. Anyone going to follow the World Cup this year?

  10. Robotics Club (Run By: Ms Parker and Ms Oliveri): As a part of the Robotics club we will develop various robotic hands-on activities and projects. We also one day hope to make the first robot teacher, one that doesn't give tests or homework.

  11. MathCounts (Run By: Mr Sampson): Marie Curie's MathCounts team has won a variety of District events. The goal is to promote mathematic enrichment through meaningful activities. Also, to win trophies.

All in all, M.S. 158 gives so many options for anyone who wants to join in on a school club. They are great experiences for basically anything you are interested in. No matter which club you are in, have lots of FUN!
