This past March 7th officially marked as the first day of a new program: Band Buddies! It’s for sixth grade band kids that want to improve their skills with their instruments. They will be paired up with an eighth grader who plays their instrument. The “buddy” can listen to you play and give any tips on improving. The club meets on Thursdays and occasionally on Tuesdays for those not available on Thursdays.
Interview With Mrs. Schecter
Q: Is this a new club, or has it happened before?
A: The Band Buddies club began in 2018 and stopped in 2020 due to COVID. This is the first time since the Pandemic that we have had Band Buddies.
Q: How did you first think of the idea for this?
A: 8th grade band students would come down to the band room during their lunch to help 6th graders. I realized that it would be fun to build these relationships in a more formal capacity. The after school format for Band Buddies served as a great opportunity for 6th graders to learn, 8th graders to lead and for friendships to form across grades. Because many of the 6th grade band classes are large, Band Buddies gives students more individualized attention and support.
Q: Would somebody in high school be allowed to sign up for this?
A: Due to scheduling it would be difficult for HS students to participate.
Q: How successful do you think this club will be in the future?
A: I feel that this club will be successful in the future because it is mutually beneficial. The 6th graders benefit from the expertise of the 8th graders and the 8th graders become better musicians and leaders. The Band Buddies club has always been highly successful because it forges music with mentoring and leadership.
Q: Most important question: Pancakes or waffles?
A: Definitely pancakes!
(Special Note: I approve of that last answer.)
(Editor Note: I do not agree!! Waffles are better.)
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this club for any beginners in the band who want to improve or any experienced older players that want to help. As of the time of writing this, there are still some spots open in the club for anyone who wants to join. I’m in band buddies myself, so I can definitely say it’s a great program for anyone interested!
