Who is to Blame for the Longest Government Shutdown in US History?

In October of 2025, the US federal government was unavailable to the public for a record amount of times. In fact, this past has been extended to be the “largest government shutdown in history.” And who is the blame for it?

Well, we have two sides: the Republicans and the Democrats. And both have had a strong impact on this shutdown. Both sides have been involved with this historical event. So between both sides, which one has more responsibility for the government shutdown?

First, let’s see what happened. It seems that Congress failed to pass legislation for the 2026 fiscal year. Democrats blocked “Clean” funding bills, which the Republicans kept sending to pass a short-term resolution. Democrats repeatedly blocked them, which caused a shutdown of funding for the government. As a result, the government shut down without enough funding.

It appears that they also demanded a higher extension of tax credits. The Republicans stated that this resolution would have made sure the government would be fully funded and included the tax credits that the Democrats wanted, and that the Democrats were playing “political games.”

Democrats are arguing that this “cleaning” bill does not include the specific taxes they required: ACA tax credits. It appears they wanted it for healthcare funding and other reasons they did not state.

Mr Fabian of Class 820 states, “This shutdown is indeed very long.” Many people are currently hoping that this shutdown will end soon, or it could make America vulnerable.

Now, public opinion. Surprisingly, the finger of blame from the public is pointing at the Republicans. The blame to Republicans compared to Democrats is about 38%: 31%. The rest think both or neither. Many people are blaming Republicans for various reasons. The Republicans were mostly responsible for the government, so that technically makes them seem more responsible. They also failed to negotiate with the Democrats, which made the blame increase. They failed to meet the demands, and that made people think that they were initially the ones to blame for the conflict between Democrats and Republicans, which caused the government shutdown.

It really is confusing. While public opinion is important and strong, it’s really hard to tell who is actually to blame. Public opinion doesn’t actually answer that. It is just who they think is to blame. But who is the real blame? Both of them seem to take a huge part of the shutdown. So there might be no answer. This question may not be answered unless the shutdown is over.

Well, we will just wait and see what the outcome is. In the meantime, we will simply wait and hope that the longest shutdown in US history will end soon.
