During the longest Government Shutdown in United States history, hundreds of flights were cancelled as the shutdown of said government leaves air traffic controllers working without pay. Disruptions at major airports at this time seem to be limited.
This cancellation comes at the worst timing as we are approaching Thanksgiving, one of the busiest times for travel in the United States. Many travel executives have been expecting this year's holiday season to break records. According to CBS News, NerdWallet’s annual holiday travel report projects that Americans will spend a staggering $311 billion on flights and hotels combined this year. That’s an average of $2,586 per person, marking an increase of about $260 compared to last year. (Source: ABC 7 New York)
Luckily, the affected airports have not seen major cancellations. On Friday, November 7th, 2025, the government started reducing 10% of flights at up to 40 major airports in the United States. This morning, airlines cancelled up to 748 flights, or almost 3% of the 25,000 scheduled flights on November 7th, 2025. Still, passengers around the United States are experiencing frustration; some, unfortunately, faced last-minute cancellations.
