Basketball at Marie Curie Middle School
Winter is coming, and it’s time for basketball! Last year, the boys basketball team had a horrible season of 0-8 (0 wins and 8 losses.) The girls team had a great season last year, with a record of 7-1. They made the championship game and unfortunately, they lost against M.S 74. For the boys team this year me and other players that are on the team are planning to do better than 0-8! So, here is some information on what is going on before the season starts.
So the season is starting in January, and both the boys and girls team are starting to prepare for the season early. The boys team already had their practice on Monday, and they're going to continue their practices every Monday. The girls team announced who made the team this Tuesday, so their practice will be next week. This girls team is looking to have the same record as last year and hopefully win the championship this time. People could be wondering “who are the coaches this year”? Well the coaches this year are the same coaches as last year for both teams. The boys team coaches are Mr. Leonardo who used to be a counseling teacher in this school, and Mr. Epstein who is also a counselor who still works in this school. Also, these coaches will be coaching the girls team like they did last year. Both of these coaches are motivated to win. I did the first practice for the boys team (because I’m on the team) and they were drawing up marvelous and creative plays. As I said, Mr. Leonardo and Mr. Epstein are the coaches of the basketball team, but how long have these excellent coaches been coaching for? Well Mr. Leonardo has been coaching for a very long time. He has been coaching for 40 years on the school team and teams outside the school. Mr. Epstein has been coaching the basketball team since the late 2010’s. Both coaches know how to coach a basketball team because they have been coaching for a very long time.
Due to the tryouts we can tell that a lot of these players from this year and last year are some of the most talented basketball players in the school. But, are there any players that stuck with basketball past high school that came from M.S 158? The answer is yes. There is this one player that came from this school that played college basketball and was a great player, his name is Ryan Williams. Unfortunately, he didn’t make the NBA, but he did spend a couple of seasons overseas in China. A lot of players who make this team have skill and a lot of athleticism. So, hopefully this year, the team can be better than last year. We shall see what happens. Until then GO COUGARS!
