All About the QHSS Open House

Students of MS 158 received their SHSAT scores and were accepted into specialized high schools. One of the schools for which I applied accepted into is QHSS (also known as York).

On Tuesday, March 11, I attended the QHSS open house and I am going to inform you about what to expect if you plan on attending this high school. 

First off, the school is indeed extremely small. We went in a circle on the 2nd floor and those were all of the classrooms. I checked out a few rooms, including the art room, math room, and science room. The classrooms themselves were very small too, and it was very clear that not a lot of people attend the school. In all the rooms there were posters showcased that highlighted the subjects and student life. In the science and math room, there were posters about the curriculum and what we’ll be learning but in the art room, there were no posters. There were actual drawings that the students drew. I was most interested in the art room because there were a lot of drawings that caught my attention. There was also a presentation about how 9th grade will be but unfortunately I wasn’t really paying attention and don’t remember much. 

One thing I did pay attention to was about the honor society. As a member of the National Junior Honor Society right now, I was interested in joining the honor society in High School too. For you to join, you need to maintain an average of a 94 and do service hours, which is basically the same requirements as the NJHS. Another thing that piqued my interest was the clubs. There is a wide selection of clubs, from sports clubs to even a K-pop club. I also heard that there is a newspaper club there too, which I will definitely look into joining. There used to be clubs during school days too although this did get removed recently. But, since it is a very small school, students' voices are more easily heard and this might be brought back!
