It’s been plastered all over the Morning Meeting slides; an interest meeting for our school newspaper "The Curious Times". The schools newspaper has been around for a long time, but over the past 5 years we have went from print to digital.

Entering 6 and rising 7th graders, have you thought about joining, but are unsure about what the experience is? Well, you heard it from me first! Have you ever heard of the Pulitzer Prize? No, it is not an award you get from the PTA, and it is not some cheesy reward given by your teachers. The Pulitzer Prize is e is awarded in the fields of journalism, literature, and music, recognizing outstanding achievements in these areas. Prizes are presented annually for works that demonstrate excellence in writing, public service, or other artistic and literary forms, including drama and cartooning.

So if winning a Pulitzer Prize is not your goal, here are a few personal reasons why to join the school newspaper (hello future Pulitzer Prize winners):

1. Most importantly, the school newspaper provides a dynamic for young adults to express their concerns. The Curious Times is an outlet for your voice to be heard. For example, you could write about anything, from your favorite sports team, or a singer you love, to current events, and school news, and even comics! Topics covered in the newspaper really have no boundaries, as long as you have something to write about! Another example is just simply speaking up for things you want to be seen in the school. One memorable article was about how cultures and heritages are represented at our school, and how some cultures are made fun of more than others, and it shed some light on an important issue. Even if your voice is just one in a crowd of around 800 people in this school, it gets a spotlight on The Curious Times!

2. Another reason is for building a strong sense of community within the club! Many fond memories from my experience as a middle schooler last year came from this amazing community of writers and overall good people. Our senior editors last year were so supportive of me and my fellow editors, and we all had good fun writing together about common interests and things happening in our little world. I also made friends with people that I didn’t really know beforehand, but I got to know them better through this club! Part of the fun in the Curious Times lies not only in writing, but the people you write with! So, if you’re interested in writing with your friends, or, perhaps finding new ones, you’ve found the right club!

That’s my take on this club! You can find numerous articles on a wide variety of topics written by our student body–past and present–by clicking here! Thanks for reading and I hope you join to build your writing prowess.
