For most students, going from 5th grade to 6th grade is a huge step and can be extremely challenging and scary. In 5th grade, the teachers would walk us through the hallways to different classes in two lines. Now, we have to walk on our own from class to class. In 5th grade, we didn’t have to carry around heavy book bags and laptops. But now, we have to carry heavy book bags and laptops. In 5th grade, teachers helped us with every step of the way. Although now, we must face some challenges alone.

I was also scared of going to 6th grade, along with many challenges that I would have to face. Some of these challenges that I was nervous for were losing my friends, failing classes, and getting lost in the hallways that stretched on for ages. However, I made many new friends, didn’t fall behind my fellow peers and didn’t get lost. One thing that I kept in mind was that no matter what, I shouldn’t back away from the challenges. Instead I should face them heads on. How can you know what you’re fully capable of if you never push yourself to your limits?

In this article, I will be writing a short story of my first month in 6th grade at MS.158.

It was my first day of 6th grade and I was extremely nervous. What if I lose friends? What if I failed my classes? What if I ended up late to every single class? I was there for the school open house and the hallways that went on forever. I took  a deep breath and walked through the doors and to the cafeteria. I didn’t know where to find it so I followed two of my friends. I wasn’t that close to them, but it didn’t matter. Many of the kids in my 5th grade class had gone to a different school. I barely knew anybody who was outside of my class.

As I entered the cafeteria, I started chatting with my friends and hoped that today would be a good day. I barely got to catch up with my friends before the bell rang. The noise echoed through the hallways and pierced my ears. This was something to get used to, I thought to myself as I head off to homeroom in a bad mood. None of my friends were in the same class as me. A sudden loneliness shot through my body as I found my homeroom and met my teachers. But, at least they were nice.

The day went by in a blur. One moment I was in the cafeteria with my friends debating whether or not we should head outside and the next moment I was in ELA class. As the bell rang once more, I realised it was time to go home. Today wasn’t bad at all. I even made a new friend. I exited the school building with hope that tomorrow would be a day as good as today.

Days passed, some slow and some fast, some bad and some good. I didn’t have time to count the days before it was the weekend again. The leaves turned red, gold and brown. Before I could check the calendar, it was already October. A month had gone by already. I’ve made many new friends, memorised my schedule and my backpack no longer felt heavy. Everything felt like a routine that I’ve done a hundred times. All I had to do was face the challenges without giving up. I was proud of how far I had come without realizing it.

6th grade may seem like a huge challenge, but once you come over it, it’ll feel like something you’ve done for so long. It’s similar to the first day of 1st grade, but only then you were younger. Now, you are braver, smarter, and more than ready to conquer 6th grade like how you’ve conquered every other grade.
