Are you ever bored or want to find a good show to watch with your family? Well, you should watch Big Brother! Big Brother started in the Netherlands and later came to the USA in July of 2000. Big Brother is a reality show where people enter a house and, through a series of competitions, nominate each other and evict each other out of the house. The goal is to reach the end alone to win $750,000.
How the Game Works
The game has changed over the years, so these are the most recent rules. At the start, 15-20 people go into a house together. They are then called the houseguests. They compete in the first HOH competition. HOH stands for Head of Household. When you are the Head of Household, you have immunity for the week and all the power in the house. It also means that you have to nominate three houseguests who have a chance at going home. The nominees are on something the show calls the block. The competitions are usually one of three things: strength, endurance, or memory/intelligence. Once the person wins and they nominate three houseguests, the veto competition happens. To veto something is to strike something down. Only six houseguests compete in this competition. The three nominees, the one HOH, and 2 people who are randomly chosen. Whoever wins has the chance to take someone off the block or not use it and keep the nominees the same. If they use the veto, the HOH has to give a replacement nominee. Then the final competition of that week is called the BB blockbuster. In the BB blockbuster, only three houseguests play: the three nominees. Whoever wins takes themselves off the block. There are only 2 houseguests on the block at the end of the week. Two minutes after the BB blockbuster, they vote on who to leave the house. It is a private vote, so no one knows who the person voted for besides us and whoever they decide to tell. They do this process for about twelve weeks. It may sound confusing, but once you start watching, it will start to make more sense.
The Finale
Once you get to the last week, it gets serious and fast. The game stays the same, but in the end, there are only two people. Usually, in week seven or eight, something called jury starts. Jury is when people start going to a separate house after being evicted. The jury is the people who vote on who wins the game. That's why you should always be nice and not make enemies. Once there are two people, they sit in two chairs and try to plead their case on why they should win. Then the jury votes on who deserves the $750,000.
What Makes the Game Fun
The game isn’t all about competitions, though it is a big part; the game is mostly about alliances and trust. In Big Brother, people make alliances where they align themselves with each other and usually keep each other safe. The reason I said that is sometimes the people in the alliances backstab each other. People often just make alliances for safety and don’t always stick to it. There is another thing called final twos, which is someone you want to seat in the final two chairs with. I would say the majority of the game is aligning yourself with the right people.
Questions you may have:
Q: Where can I watch it?
A: On regular television, Paramount, some episodes on netflix and hulu. It's usually 35 to 42 episodes. My family records it since we can’t always watch it live.
Q: When can I watch it?
A: Usually in the Summer. Last season the episodes were on Wednesday,Thursday, and Sundays. However, it might change in the upcoming seasons.
Q: Who is the host?
A: Julie Chen Moonves. Fun fact: She actually went to St. Francis Prep! You can find her picture on the wall of the staircase in the main entrance.
Q: What season is it on?
A: The next season will be the 27th.
Q: Are there any extra seasons or other things related to the show?
A: Yes! Sometimes there are Celebrity seasons, which is when winners, or really good players, of previous seasons come together to compete. They only did this once, but sometimes they have reindeer games, which are all competitions.
Q: What is its rating?
A: Its rating is 16+. However, I don’t think it should be rated that high. Sometimes they use profanities but they always censor it.
