All about the 7Eleven Slurpee

Oscar Chen

The Slurpee is a carbonated frozen drink sold exclusively at 7-Eleven and its subsidiaries. The name comes from the sound it makes when sipped through a straw. It was invented by accident in the 1950s by Kansas Dairy Queen owner Omar Knedlik, when soda bottles he kept frozen to prepare in case of broken machinery became slushy and when sold, was popular with customers. In 1966, 7-Eleven licensed the drink from Knedlik's Icee Company and rebranded it as ‘The Slurpee’.

First slurpee flavors

At first, the only flavors were Coca-Cola and Cherry. Now there are at least 34 Slurpee flavors available across America, including regional Slurpee flavors such as “Dr Brown’s Black Cherry Soda” sold exclusively in 7-Elevens across NYC, and even more if you like to mix your own drink. That's something for everyone.

Fun Fact about Slurpees:

  • Forty percent of Slurpees are sold during the summer months of June, July and August.

  • Enough drinks are sold each year to fill 12 Olympic sized swimming pools.

  • In Canadian 7-Elevens, an average of 30 million Slurpee drinks are sold every year.

  • Annually, 7-Eleven treats all of their customers with a FREE Slurpee Drink on 1/31 and 7/11
