If you see something say something

Updated: Dec 21, 2021

What happens behind teachers’ backs? School is a place for learning and socialization, not a place for students to be traumatized; but what about times when eyes cannot be on the students? What about the “hot spots”, where teachers can’t always be? If you were to ask a teacher, I bet most of them would tell you that there isn’t too much bullying, besides the occasional “harmless joke” or could it be a friendship conflict? Wait, when the teacher isn’t looking, take notice of what you might hear. “You’re short, you’re weird,” some of the verbal bullying words we hear around town.

We students need to be empowered. We need a voice and we need to be “Upstanders.” “See something and Say Something,” is what you hear at MS 158Q. Those of us who are not strong enough to directly help the underdog ourselves need to remember that there are other ways to be an Upstander. Our adults are there and want to help us to have the best school experience we can. We need to enlist the help of a trusted adult, distract the bully and empower our inner selves.

Do you feel like you have a trusted adult in the building? A teacher is a frontline worker who is there to educate and protect his/her students. What about your Guidance Counselor or one of our Administrators? Although they see a lot of what goes on, sometimes things are not as visible to the naked eye. We need to help our trusted school adults to help us.
