8th Grade opinion on "Winterfest" and the Christmas Spirit

Updated: Feb 21, 2022

It’s almost Christmas, with less than 2 weeks left. How are students spending their Christmas? One student said, “I have a 24 days of Christmas calendar where I eat one chocolate everyday.”

Another student said, “I am opening gifts in the morning and spending time with my family.” There are many different ways to celebrate the Christmas spirit, and they vary for each family. In our school, we are a “family” too, and this year we are celebrating the Christmas spirit with Winterfest!

During Winterfest, each day is a different activity. Over 10 activities have already taken place. The activities vary from ugly Christmas sweater contests to kazoo challenges based off Christmas music! Each activity gives your homeroom a certain amount of points, and at the end of December, the homeroom with the most points gets a pizza party! So far, class 602 is in the lead. One of the most competitive competitions is the door decorating contest. Each grade is competing to win for best door. Others have just been decorating for fun and to celebrate Christmas. Here are some statements from kids that have been decorating their door.

“Me and my two other friends have been decorating for over 2 weeks. We feel like we have a unique theme that stands out from the others. The competition we have are the classes with more student participation. We are single handedly decorating the door everyday, missing out on lunch and recess yet we have a slow outcome. We have a great idea and hope it at least gets some appreciation from others if it doesn’t win! Check out our door at room 304!”

“We want to win the door competition and the winterfest contest. Our door has the potential to win.”

Kids have a lot of motivation for the door decorating contest. Some want to win and some just want their art to be appreciated. A lot of classes have been covering the hallways with decorations, which makes the school shine with Christmas spirit. Some have covered their door with wrapping paper or filled it with stickers. Either way, the contest is such a great way to get in the Christmas spirit.

Songs are another great way to get into the Christmas spirit. Recently, the school had a challenge to make a Christmas video of the class singing to a christmas classic. Some classes have already submitted them while some are still planning. What’s your favorite Christmas song? Some kids have shared their favorites down below!

“Rocking around the Christmas tree (Brenda Lee), Santa Tell Me (by Ariana Grande), and Merry and Happy (TWICE).”

“Last Christmas and Santa Tell me by Ariana Grande”

“All I Want for Christmas is You and Santa Tell Me are my favorites.”

“I like Jingle Bells because my mom enjoys that song.”

The kids at M.S. 158 seem to think music is a fun way to get in the Christmas spirit. Another fun idea that the school has been trying is allowing students to show off their Christmas spirit through clothing, by having an ugly sweater contest. Classrooms were full of holiday joy as students all wore their ugliest Christmas sweaters. This idea has also been applied to showing off school spirit, by wearing the school’s colors. The class with the most people showing off school spirit got a prize for their dedication. It was a great motivation for all of the students and teachers.

Seems like Marie Curie is doing all sorts of activities to celebrate Christmas. Some might be decorating or wearing ugly sweaters, or even making videos of classes singing Christmas songs. Marie Curie is definitely a school with a lot of Christmas spirit.

MERRY CHRISTMAS M.S. 158!!
